The Age of Decline

The primals left the cities and towns and formed their own societies (usually called tribes). Each race was represented in the primal community, either in mixed or pure tribes. Over generations, they began to develop a discipline of their own that called forth the innate power of the natural world. Thus, the primal disciplines were born. It met the ferocity of the wild in kind. Initially scorned and mocked, the primals eventually earned a reputation of toughness and boldness. They lived on lands most civilized folks would never dare visit. They did not hide behind walls built along the coasts. Druids, barbarians, woodsmen, and even reclusive monks established their own equilibrium with the Wild.
During the rise of the primals, those devoted to the other disciplines began to experience serious conflicts within their own ranks. The rate of advancement of the disciplines began to stagnate, forcing some to push their arts into dangerous areas. By far, the most aggressive group were those of the arcane discipline. The Wizards of Cisharum, an elite and secretive cult, were most notorious. They began as a mysterious society of wizards devoted to the expansion of arcane power in the world. Their true purpose and philosophy is a matter of great debate. They experimented with dangerous combinations of ritual and spell magic that became known as The Gnosis. Indeed, they reached new heights of arcane power never thought possible. There are tales of a single Wizard of Cisharum devastating attacking hoards of orcs, ogres, and hill giants single-handedly. They were said to walk into the air, to be impervious to blades and arrows, to call down waves of dragon flame upon their foes. Displays of power by Wizards of Cisharum are said to have turned the faithful from prayers to a study of the arcane. Most practitioners of magic held them in distain (whether out of jealousy or sound reasoning is not known) saying their reckless research and experimentation put everyone in danger. What began with public criticism and denouncement eventually ended in banishment for the Wizards of Cisharum.
From this point forward the facts become obscure and infrequent. It is generally thought that the Wizards of Cisharum were cast out and retreated to some secret fortress. Some held that it was on some small island far out to sea. Others say it was deep within the wilds, in a mountainous layer. What is known is that their work continued. Years later, they returned, intent on revenge. Some say their wild use of magic lead to madness. Holy men say that they are cursed by their magic. That the mark of their dark sorcery has damned them.
